Biography

Maurice is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He moved to Sutherlin, VA at an early age and there he graduated from the Halifax County Public School System. After graduation, Maurice enlisted in the United States Army and served dutifully for six years. After being Honorably Discharged, Maurice returned to Virginia where he started a very successful career in Information Technology. 


Maurice has served as the Information Technology Director for Danville Public School System. He later became the first Chief Information Officer for the Institute for Advanced Learning & Research (IALR). After six years at the IALR, Maurice accepted a position as the Assistant Director for the Center for Public Technology with the School of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After serving the school for 13 years and becoming their first Associate Dean for Information Management, Maurice accepted a position with the State of North Carolina where he currently serves as the Vice President for Technology and CIO for the North Carolina Higher Education System.


Maurice preached his initial sermon on August 25, 2012, at his home church, White Oak Grove Baptist Church in Sutherlin, VA. He was licensed there under the leadership of the late Reverend Dr. Melvin Fuller. Maurice served as the Seventh Pastor of the Bethel Grove Baptist Church in Clover, VA before being elected as the 9th Pastor of the Vance Street Missionary Baptist Church in December of 2017. 


Maurice holds a PhD in Leadership Studies from the North Carolina A&T State University. He also holds a Master's in Business Administration degree from Liberty University, a Bachelor's in Business degree from Averett University and an Associate's Degree in Information Technology degree from Danville Community College. 


Maurice is married to the former Vilma Gonzalez Alvarado. Maurice and Vilma reside in Yanceyville, NC and they have three young adult children, Aliyah, Sean and Emily.
